13th Amendment and 14th Amendment

                                                              13th Amendment

The 13th Amendment is consisted of two section. It states that,  "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction", This describes how the Constitution decided to make it illegal for people of color to be used as slaves in the United States. This shows how many African American finally had the liberty that they had been waiting for so long. However, there was still much discrimination to people of color so that is why the second section is helpful in action. The second sections states that "Congress shall have the power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation"(A-12). This explains how the government can empower new laws to maintain a previous law. This way if the law is being unjust the Congress can find a way to regulate it and fix the problem.

                                                               14th Amendment

The 14th Amendment has five sections to describe in depth how every individual who has been born in the U.S  is automatically a citizen and that right can not be taken away from them. The first section quotes, "nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law;"(A-12). Every person born in the United States is a citizen and no state can take their rights away from voting. The second section explains how the voting worked and what the rules in order to vote. The United States appointed Representatives for all the states. They counted every person as a whole but not Indians because they were not being taxed. This section states that the right to vote can not be denied to male citizens who were of twenty-one  age or older. The third section describes who could run for a position as president, vice-president, senator or representative in Congress and so on. No person can hold an office position if they have taken an oath of loyalty or if they had previously had been involved in the insurrection or rebellion. The fourth section shows that the congress believed that the U.S. should not be questioned at all and that the U.S. will not pay debt caused by the rebellion. "But neither the United States nor any state shall assume or pay any debt or obligation incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the united States, or any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave.."(A-12).  This explains how the U.S. did not want to be associated anymore with regards to the rebellion and any debt that people had in the time. The last section which is the 5th one explains in short how the Congress can implement the laws of the 14th Amendment.

Collaborative Essay(An Ocurrence at Owl Creek Bridge 3rd question)

Bierce switches from distant third-person to an omniscient point of view to show important his wife and children are to him. " With a noose around his neck he closed his eyes in order to fix in his last thoughts upon his wife and children"(Bierce 32). Bierce wants his audience to know what was going on throught Peytons mind at that moment. Peytons last thoughts were about how important family and nature were to him. This proves how Peyton was not a bad person as he was portrayed to be but also had a caring side to him.
